Song of the Week

This has been a great week. I've been enjoying the time with The Man while he's been on leave. I'm sad that it's ending but he has to go back to work sometime. I let him pick the song this week. This is one of his current favorites: This is the Stuff by Francesca Battistelli

I'm also going to say that I'm happy I'm not in the Northeast. They're expecting snow. I'm done with winter...come on spring, hurry up and get here!

Don't forget to head over to Goodnight Moon to link up!

Wall Hanging

I FINALLY finished a project!  I started it about 3 years ago..or maybe 4?  I'm not sure.  Anyway, It was in the works for awhile.  The top came together very easily.  I made the pattern as I went along.  The ladies were a panel so I just cut them apart and framed them with different fabrics I had in my stash.  I added the 9 patch in the middle to mix it up a bit.  I was very pleased with the way it turned out.

The finished quilt
The finished top sat for awhile and then I quilted it, made the binding and put the binding on.  Then it sat some more.  Eventually I got around to finishing the binding, though that took several months of me doing a little then putting it down, picking it up and doing a little and then putting it down.  Once that once done it sat a little more until I put the label and sleeve on the back (my least favorite part!)

Hanging it up with Molly supervision

The very last part was hanging it up.  I managed to convince The Man that NOW was a good time to hang it up.  I used an old curtain rod that doesn't fit our windows in this house.  It's a perfect fit!  We no longer have a big boring white spot on our wall.

New Door Part I

One of the things we love about our house is all the doors and windows.  Before we bought it all of the windows and doors were replaced...except for two.  There are two sliding doors that were old, single pain aluminum doors they they kept.  We think they kept it them because they are expensive to replace.  It's possible they are original to our 1940's house.  One of the doors was in our bedroom and when you stood in the room you could feel the heat leaving the house.  It just flew by you.  Our room tended to be on the cold side.  We countered by cuddling under a microfiber sheets, a down comforter, a quilt and a fuzzy blanket.

Even though it's March we decided that it was time to replace the door.  Thank you tax return!  The sliding door was 8 ft wide.  Most doors in the store are only 6 ft.  You have to special order the wider doors and they get expensive.  So The Man came up with a plan.  The plan included buying 6 ft French doors and putting in glass bricks on either side.  The image was great in our heads so we decided to try it.  He even built himself a drafting table so he could draw it out.

So The Man got what he needed and on Saturday got to work.  He started by making the frame for the glass bricks and then worked on taking out the old door.

The old door didn't want to come out.  It's been in there for YEARS and was quite happy where it was.  It obviously didn't take our hints that he wouldn't be staying around much longer.  The first door came out no problem.  The second one was a bit harder.  This is what happened:

Classic.  It was awesome!  Thankfully we had purchased a 20 gallon shop vac.  It came in handy!  The frame didn't want to come out either but our new yellow crowbar was able to convince it otherwise.

All of that was before lunch.  Once the frame was out The Man took a break to enjoy some chicken soup that I made.  Soup that was delicious enough that he didn't have to add salt to!  That's saying a lot as he adds salt to EVERYTHING.

Stay tuned for part II

Fort Lewis Help

Hey lovely readers...

I have a question for you.  I had a friend from high school contact me and ask if I was at Fort Lewis.  I'm not.  But I know that some of you are.  She's had a friend recently move there and is looking for some resources for her, like mom's groups.  Do you guys know of any?  If not, any ideas on where she should check?  I would have told her to check with her Ombudsman (that's what we call our liaison with the command...not sure what the Army equivalent is, if there is one.)

Thanks for your help!

Swagbucks & Japan

japan earthquake.jpgI don't know how many, if any, of you use swagbucks.  Basically you earn "swagbucks" when you surf online (and do other things if you want) and you can then use them to purchase items in the Swag store.  I tend to use mine for Amazon & Starbucks gift cards.

Until Friday, April 8th you can donate some of your swagbucks to help Japan.  You can click here to be taken to the donation page.  The swagbucks will be converted in to USD and given to All Hands Volunteers.  Every little bit counts!

If you're not using Swagbucks and you'd like to be you can sign up at any time.  Right now if you sign up you can get extra 50 swagbucks by using the code HelpJapan during registration.  Click the button in the right column to register.

My Song...Summertime

It was nice and warm today here in the Pacific Northwest. I opened my sun roof (it might be a moon roof...I don't know the difference) and had the windows down....pure bliss. I'm so ready for spring and summer.

This is my number one song on my summer play list. You know the the one I'm talking about. The one you listen to with all the windows down and the volume up LOUD. To me, Summertime by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince screams summer...and not just because of the title. I love the beat. The song might date me but I've loved it ever since it came out. I can sing the whole thing, much to the amusement of The Man. I've even used it in the classroom...I had my kids listen to it when we were talking about different music genres.

Sorry for the video quality...it's all I could find on YouTube.

Tale of a Broken Computer

When my computer broke we bought a new one.  I was in computer heaven until my new computer died.  There's something wrong with the hard drive.  So my computer has been sitting in my black chair, sad, lonely and sick.  I've been forced to use The Man's computer when he's not around.  Let's just say it's time for him to get a new one too!  It's really slow and is driving me CRAZY.  My old computer is sitting on my desk and still works...it just has to lean against the wall to be used.  I've been using it but it's been acting up too.  I think it's jealous that I've been using other computers.  Also, the chair to the desk isn't the best and I've been having some lower back pain.  Not fun people, not fun.

All that to say...my amazing, incredible, sexy, loving husband called some tech people and we are getting a new hard drive shipped out to us so he can fix it.  SCORE!  I'm so excited.  I'm looking forward to getting my computer back!

Until then I probably won't be blogging much, if at all.  I also will not be reading as many blogs.  I'll be back in a few days....I hope you have a wonderful week!

Confuzzled

I'm a bit confuzzled (confused) about my days this week.  The Man is on leave and it's totally throwing me off.  It didn't feel like Monday today at all.  I have to keep reminding myself what day it is.  Even though I'm not keeping my days straight, I love having The Man home!

We went down to Salem, OR yesterday to celebrate my mother-in-law's birthday.  My brother-in-law cooked an amazing three course meal.  It started off with French onion soup, followed by salad with homemade dressing followed by pot roast with mashed potatoes and green beans.  Along with homemade rolls.  For dessert there was homemade cookies and carrot cake.  It was AMAZING!  M, my brother-in-law used to own a restaurant and he's a great cook.

After dinner we played a game, the name of which is escaping me.  It has black tiles with 6 different shapes & 6 different colors.  It's kind of like dominoes.  Anyway, that was a lot of fun too.

Miss Molly came along and got to meet her cousins.  She wasn't thrilled about it but got along pretty well with them.  Shawshank, or show for short was to small for Molly to really care about about and Soba, a pointer mix was smart enough to stay away from her while she was growling.

The best part of the night was playing Mario Kart.  The Man & I LOVE Mario Kart.  We play it just about every night.  We learned that we can play against other people online.  I'm not sure what century we're living it but it was so much fun!  We're looking forward to M and his girlfriend E coming up so we can play against each other...since we had to share two remotes last night.

There would have been some more photos included in this post except I didn't take any.  Except for one on the way home.  It was just way to cute to pass up!  And I'm writing this on The Man's computer and it isn't coperating...so you'll get to see the picture another day.

Thoughts for Today

I haven't done a Simple Woman's Daybook in awhile and thought that today would be a good day for one.  It's a gorgeous Saturday and I'm unexpectedly at home.  It's the little things!

FOR TODAY,

Outside my window...it's nice and sunny.  Spring is starting to arrive and I'm enjoying a break from the rain.

I am thinking...about what I need to do for my party tonight.  I'm also trying to figure out why my lower back is bothering me.

I am thankful for...the fact that The Man is on leave!  His schedule has been really hectic for the past month and I feel like we've been ships passing in the night this past week.  Or maybe it's passing during the day since I've only seen him at late at night.  We'll be staying at home because he still has stuff at night but he'll be home during the day.  I'm very glad I set my own work schedule!

From the kitchen...nothing at the moment.  But I'm making creamy lemon-pesto Chicken & linguine at the party tonight.  It's so yummy.

I am wearing...comfy clothes...gray yoga pants, a red fleece and furry flip flop slippers.

I am creating....stuff in my head.  I have a few wall hangings coming together in my head as well as some baby gifts.

I am going...to Salem, OR (soon) to celebrate my mother-in-laws birthday.  I know Miss Molly is looking forward to it too...she loves to ride in the car.

I am reading...Little Women.

I am hoping...for a few things.  I'm going to keep them in my head for now.

I am hearing...Bones season 4 is on in the background.  I also hear Alleycat getting into papers that he should be leaving alone.  He likes to explore and it sometimes gets him in trouble!

Around the house...fur.  I need to vacuum again even though I did yesterday.  There's also some clutter I should get rid of.

One of my favorite things...warm green ginger tea.  Reading on my kindle.  Getting kitty cuddles and some puppy love.  Getting kisses from The Man when he come home.

A few plans for the rest of the week:  Spend time with The Man!  I'm babysitting on Tuesday and Thursday all day but the other days will be at home.  I have several things I'd like him to do around the house.  If the weather is nice hopefully we'll be able to take Miss Molly out to play.

Here is picture for thought I am sharing...

It's Friday again...

and that means Milspouse Friday Fill-in with Wifey!  Head on over to link up and/or read what other Milspouses have to say.

1.  What are some  of your ideas for staying connected with family...you know, those people we moved thousands of miles away from?

Blogging is a great way to keep family & friends in the loop with what we're doing, as is Facebook.  Skype is great to SEE them when you're talking and of course the phone and old fashioned letters & packages are great too!

2.What's the most romantic gift you have GIVEN?

I'm not the most romantic person.  Sometimes I think romance can be overrated.  Don't get me wrong, it's nice to have and I enjoy it as much as the next girl.  To me, there are times I find it in the day to day mundane things...you know, the things you do that you don't think about.  The things you do for your spouse becuase you love them...like having dinner ready when The Man comes home hungry and tired. Letting him sleep in.  Letting him putter and do who know what downstairs.  Sending song lyrics that remind me of him/us when he's deployed.  Listening to him rant about his day.  Being there for him when he's struggling.  Watching ANOTHER episode of Family Guy.  Buying him more smarties and enabling him in this candy addiction.  Greeting him with a hug and kiss when he gets home from work.  You know...all those little things.  They add up and speak louder than words.

3.  Would you encourage your child, if they came to you and wanted to join the military?

We don't have kids yet but we've talked about this one already.  Neither one of us is against them joining the military.  The Man is adamant that they would NOT enlist.  They would need to go in as an Officer.  I'm not as adamant as he is but I get his point.  I do understand that college is not for everyone and if they wanted to enlist I HOPE I'll be ok with that.

4.  What is your least favorite bill to pay and why?

There's this one credit card bill that I have that it just bugs me every time I pay it.  It's almost paid off thankfully.  It's mostly the dental work I had to have done in 07 & 08.  Yup, it's 2011 and I'm still paying it off.  Oral surgery is SO EXPENSIVE.  At least my implants look good!

 5.  What is the proudest moment you've had as a military spouse?

I'm super proud of the fact that a little event did not derail The Man's career and he's still working hard.  He does his best to problem solve and figure out issues & problems on the boat.  Most days he even enjoys his job!

Hope you have a great weekend!

YAY!

I'm running out of creativity for blog post titles.  Sorry about that!  Two things:

1.  Happy St. Patty's day!  Did you know that there are more people of Irish descent in the US than in Ireland?  I always find that little fact amusing.  I am one of those Irish people in the US and I even remembered to put on green today.  Most years I forget.  I had to get all my kisses from The Man this morning as I won't see him again until tomorrow.  Also, no corn beef and cabbage for me which is sad cause I do like it.  Maybe next year!

2.  I'm a guest blogger today over at The Annoyed Army Wife.  Go check out my post on our honeymoon...an Alaskan Cruise.

How are you celebrating St. Patrick's Day?

Crazy?

The Man ran across some info for the Tacoma Remodeling Expo and wanted to go.  We have several projects lined up in our heads  for the house so I thought it would be a good idea to go to.  So we went.  I'm glad the entry fee was only $5 cause it wasn't worth much more than that.  Most of the vendors were for remodeling kitchens & baths, redoing you roof and gutters.  Then there were the random jewelry people, along with Scentsy & Mary Kay (don't get me wrong, I like both very much, but at a home remodeling show?)

I was disappointed in the vendors too.  Most of them were hiding behind their tables looking at their phones.  I'm sorry, a show like this is to get leads.  That means you need to be friendly, making eye contact and saying hello and talking to people as they walk by.  I've done fairs and you are there for leads...I even managed to get a few walking around!  Be friendly people!  Ok, end rant...

We didn't walk away with much info.  We did however, walk away with a new floor mat.  Yes, a floor mat.  It's supposed to be a miracle mat and get all the water & dirt off your shoes & paws as you walk across it.  They were doing demos and it worked amazingly well (of course it would!)  You can throw it in the washer & the dryer...and it helps make it more absorbent.  It has a 5 year guarantee and nothing voids it.  After walking by it 3 times and watching and talking, we bought one.  A commercial size one for our hallway that is ALWAYS covered in muddy paw prints.  I'm still in shock about how much we paid for it.  I can't believe I spent that much money FOR A FLOOR MAT!

They say it should be washed & dried before using it but we couldn't wait.  We just put it down.  Miss Molly liked it and thought it might work as her new bed.  It's working OK so far.  I'm going to wash it today and hopefully it will get more water off Molly's paws.

How much are you willing to pay for a floor mat?
What's the most you've ever paid for one?

Dear Daylight Savings...

I would like my hour of sleep back please.  Some sunshine would be nice too but I understand that it doesn't fall under your jurisdiction.  You might know someone who knows someone and it would be greatly appreciated if you would pass the word along (and would go a long way to helping me like you more this week).  Thank you!

Sincerely,
Poekitten

It's Friday!

I was going to have this post done last night and scheduled to post but we lost the internet last night.  It was very windy here yesterday so I wasn't surprised when the internet stopped working!  It happens.  It's nothing compared to the images I've seen of Japan this morning.  I knew nothing about it until I read a few statuses on Facebook.  Once I saw the images online and on TV, I'm sitting here in shock.  I can't even begin to imagine what it's like there.  My prayers are with Japan.  I'm not sure where the US bases are in relation to the damage but they are also in my prayers.

On to the Friday Fill In questions.  If you'd like to participate, head over to Wife of a Sailor to link up...and say hi to Wifey!  I think she could use some love...

1. During military separations (whether short or long) how do you keep yourself positive and motivated?

I like to stay busy.  During DH's last deployment (we were engaged) I taught full time, started my own business, planned a wedding and spent as much time with family & friends as possible.

2.  What is your favorite concert you have ever been to?

I"m not sure.  I really enjoyed the Rock and Worship Roadshow this past weekend and Creation was pretty great too.  I really enjoy Toby Mac in concert.  Dave Matthews Band was also great when I saw them back in college.

3.  What do you miss most about your “hometown”?

Being close to family & friends.

4.  If you could run in any race, which charity would you choose to support?

The chances of me running in any race is slim to none!  There are several charities I would be willing to support...Compassion, helping raise money for  missions or adoptions, for wounded military, for animals...

5.  You find out Willy Wonka is your father, what 3 course meal do you INSIST he create in that stick of gum?

This is a great question!   I think I'd ask for two...one that starts with buffalo chicken wings, then some grilled pizza topped with fresh basil and garlic.  I'd end this one off with a chocolate lava cake.  Yum!  The second one would have a bruschetta followed by The Man's stuffed pork chops with some potatoes and a veggie followed by a chocolate peanut butter pie.  I"m now hungry and need to go eat breakfast.  Have a great weekend!

When The Stars Go Blue

I'm linking up with Goodnight Moon for my song of the week. I missed last week but am happy to be back! I've been feeling kinda nostalgic lately and have a playlist that I listen to when I'm in this mood. One of my favorites from the playlist is When the Stars Go Blue. I LOVE this song. Enjoy!

Cover

Original Cover
My parents surprised me with a Kindle for Christmas.  I LOVE it.  To go along with it they also got me a red case for it.  Since red's my favorite color, it was perfect.  The cover was great...until my Kindle stopped working.  It happened twice and I ended up going online.  Come to find out that sometimes the cover causes the Kindle to short...or something like that.  The battery drains really fast and it has to be recharged and sometimes reset.  Not cool.  So I stopped using the cover and the problem stopped.  No cover is fine for around the house.  But when I want to take it somewhere I want it to be at least a little protected.  So I decided to make a cover.

I probably should have looked online at some patterns to get some ideas but instead I headed downstairs and just started playing.  It didn't turn out like it looked in my head but it works!  It's just a simple sleeve that the Kindle slides in and out of.   It will be protected from scratches which is was I was concerned about..  At some point I'll probably make something else but this works for now.

The cover

Best friends...

Have you ever tried to make something without a pattern?
How did it turn out?

Rock and Worship Road Show

Source
The Rock and Worship Road Show put in an appearance in Seattle so we decided to go!  It may have had something to do with the fact that Jars of Clay was performing...one of my favorite bands.  I've wanted to see them for YEARS!  I did see them in December 2008 but it was for a Christmas concert.  It was great but I still wanted to see them again.  With tickets being only 10 bucks it was a no brainer about going.  Mercy Me, Matt Maher, Thousand Foot Krutch, The Afters, LeCrae, and Anthem Lights also performed.  There was something for everyone and we loved the mix of genres.  If you live in any of the cities that they are playing in this week you should go!

It was a great night of music.  I love the worship songs...it's a balm for my spirit.  It was a little slice of heaven.  I miss singing songs other than hymns in church sometimes.  And I miss the guitar, drums and all other instruments really.  When I married The Man I became a conservative Lutheran.  We sing hymns.  Every Sunday to the piano or organ.  Don't get me wrong, I love me some hymns and the piano too.  However, I've been going to the same church for a year and a half and I'm just starting to recognize some of the hymns.  We don't sing the sames ones a lot so it's going to take some time to learn them!

Friday Fill-In

Wow, it's March!  2011 is flying by.  What better way to welcome it than with a Milspouse fill in?  Head over to Wife of a Sailor to get the questions and link up!

1.  Do you or your {spouse} ever wish your {spouse} was in a different branch of the military?

Nope.  The Navy is working just fine for us!

2.  What duty station(s) are on your “No Way, Hell No, Not Going, Have Fun Unaccompanied” list and why?

I don't think there is a base that I would send him to unaccompanied by choice.  He would only go by himself if the Navy told us that's the way it was going to be...otherwise I'm going with him.  I"d rather be with him in a yucky place than in a nice place without him.  But that's just me.  However, we do each have a list of duty stations that we would prefer not to go to.  The ONLY ONE that leaves is where we are right now.  He is willing to go to Groton, CT since it's close to my family.  Since he's a sub guy there aren't that many duty stations..for sea duty anyway.  We don't talk about shore duty much...

3.  If you could be one age forever, what age would you choose and why?

I think I would chose my twenties.  I know isn't one age, but I would start with 22 and go through 29.  Graduating college, living overseas, teaching in the US, meeting The Man, getting married and moving...I would do it over and over again!
Source

4.  If you were a breakfast cereal, which one would you be?

I asked The Man and he first said he wasn't going to go with the obvious of Nut N' Honey.  He then spend several minutes contemplating the question, becoming a little distracted by the episode of Mythbusters that was on.  He finally decided Kix.  He chose that because I appear plain yet once tried I'm completely irresistible and exactly what he needs.

5.What is your morning beverage of choice and why?

Hot tea.  I prefer a cup of green tea but I'll drink what ever is on hand!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Rings...

I saw that Rebekah at Life With The Edwards was linking up Mrs. Yellow Ribbons to show off their rings.  I'm not gonna lie, I've been lacking inspiration lately.  Life has been normal, busy and very unblog worthy.  So I'm going to participate because it's fun...and it gives me something to write about!

Show us your rings...
Did you look at rings together?
We did.  While we were out one evening for dinner at the mall, we decided to look at rings.  We had talked about it and knew we wanted to get married.  I showed him some that I liked...more on the plain side.  I didn't want anything larger than a 1/2 carat since I have a tendency to go to countries that aren't wealthy.  I didn't want something that would draw lots of attention.  I also have small hands and when I tried one some of the ornate rings I didn't like the way they looked for felt.

For the wedding band I tried on some with diamonds but I didn't like the way they looked.  I love how they look on everyone else, just not on my hand!  Plus we waited until 3 days before the wedding to buy the bands.  Go us!  We were trying to save money for moving & our honeymoon so only one of us could get a "pricey" ring.  I already had a diamond and I wanted him to have the band he really liked instead of a plain one.  I love his band...and so does he!

Do you like your ring? Did you from the beginning?...and be honest!
Yup, I loved my ring.  I had kinda wanted a diamond in the middle and two smaller ones on the side.  I didn't get that BUT I loved it.  I still love it.  He did tell me that I'll get the two smaller ones someday.  I like the suspense and it gives me something to look forward to!
How often do you wear your rings?
I wear my rings all the time.  I do tend to play with them, spin them around my finger and sometimes they migrate to the other hand.  I have freaked out cause they were missing...they were on my right hand.

Now that I think of it...I have taken them off when I wash washing really greasy dishes, hand mixing food or putting my hands in dye. So maybe once or twice.  That's it!  They DO NOT come of my fingers!

Do you clean your rings?
I'll have them cleaned when we're at the mall and we remember.  I should do it more often.

What went through your mind the very first time you saw your ring?
I can't believe he's proposing right now!  I hope I don't drop it off the side of the boat!  We were on a sunset cruise and I had already had some champagne and was feeling it a little.  I was in shock because I was not expecting it.  I knew it was coming but didn't think it was going to be that night.

You can head over to Mrs. Yellow Ribbons to join in!

Lost and Found

Source
So back in December when I was driving back to WA from MA with my friend Meg, I lost my keys.  I have a big set of keys and it was getting cumbersome to have them with me all the time.  The only one I was using was the car key, so I took it off and put the other keys somewhere safe so I wouldn't lose them.  I must have done done this on the second day or so.

Fast forward 4ish days.  We arrive home and it's about 5:30.  It's pitch black out since it's winter.  I had no idea where the keys are.  We're locked out.  Meg & I start tearing the car apart and we're searching in all our bags, under the seats, in the console, in the door.  I make some calls and find out that a friend does have a key!  YAY, we can go get it so we start reassembling the car.  Molly doesn't really want to get back in, but she has too.  Before we drive off I just go and check one thing.  I'm able to finagle my way into the house.  I go and open the door.  Molly comes bounding in and I call out to Meg that we can get it and I see utter relief on her face.  I call my friend and tell them I'll get the key later.  Thankfully we had 1 spare key in the house and that's what I've been using.

Fast forward to today, March 2, 2011. I stopped by the Department of Licensing to see if a copy of my title had arrived so I could transfer my plates. (I've been trying since last week to do this).  Thankfully it was there and I could get WA plates.  I am no longer a resident on MA...Officially I live in WA.  Bittersweet.  My MA plates are on the car cause I haven't gotten a chance to change them yet (obviously blogging about it was more important!)  I needed my registration so I ran out to the car to get and pulled out all sorts of paper from my glove box.  I threw the papers on the passenger seat and took what I needed back in with me.  Once I got back out with my brand new plates (the one in the picture IS NOT mine!) and went to put the papers back in the glove box.  And what do I see there?  Keys!  That's where I put my keys for safe keeping!  I really thought Meg & I had had looked there.  Guess not!  I'm happy to have my keys back though I think I'm going to get rid of what I don't need.  I've gotten use to carrying smaller, lighter keys!

Have you lost anything recently?
Where did you find it?

Forgot

I forgot something on my list of February blessings yesterday.  I feel bad since it was a big one!  My brain has been much lately and I don't have a good reason why.

In February my nephew, Matthais Mark was born!  He was born a week late...he was super comfy I guess.  He was eagerly awaited by his parents, older brother, 3 older sisters, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends.  I think he's handsome...what do you think?

I wish I was on the other side of the country to meet him!  He's going to be so big before Auntie Poe gets to hug and squeeze and kiss him.  I know that there are plenty people who are filling in for me.  His sibling are so happy he's here.  They are amazing kids.  I know the oldest are a huge help to mom and dad. I'm hoping to get out there in late spring to meet him...and spoil him!  That's what babies are for, right?
