Nappies

One of the things that The Man and I have decided to do for Munchkin is to put her in cloth diapers.  I have several friends, both in real life and online that cloth diaper.  After doing research and talking about it, we decided that this will work for us.

We decided to go this route for a few reasons.  One is that we hope to have more children.  I’d love to be able to reuse diapers instead of having to keep buying them.  I like that there will be less chemicals against Munchkin’s sensitive skin.  While I’m not super crunchy (I like to say I’m crunchy around the edges) I like knowing that I’m not contributing thousands of diapers to landfills.  Now if you use disposables, awesome. I am well aware that cloth diapers are NOT for everyone.  I am not judging those who use disposables…when you’re mom (or dad) you do what you gotta do.  As long as  your little one’s bum is cleaned on a regular basis then I’m happy!

My Mom has been more supportive than I thought she would be.  She’s not sure how long it will actually last (I’ve had several people say that!)   While I was in MA we took a class at the local quilt shop on making nappies (nappies=diapers.)  It was fun though I don’t love following a pattern that you have to use to cut out the pieces.  Mom did much better with it since she used to sew clothes.  Maybe that’s why I don’t like sewing clothes…

Anyway I made one diaper and Mom made two.  I’m hoping she’ll make me a couple more in a few other sizes.  I need to start making more too!

I made a diaper using the purple as the inner layer and the green and purple squares at the outer (with PUL in the middle.)  Mom made one out of the red material.

My finished diaper, size small.  It’s really a diaper cover.  I’m going to buy some inserts to use with it (or use some of the prefolds that I have.)

  3. We used cloth with our second baby (they were hard to find with #1) and I loved them! I've always said if we have more kids I will use them exclusively! I love that you and your mom made your own! So cute!

  7. Those are super cute! I feel like people give way too many opinions in this (and many other baby issues) but when it comes down to it, each family should do whatever works for that family. My mom used cloth with me but my cousins all had disposable and we all turned okay, so who cares? lol

  8. That's one (very small) reason why I want to use cloth! But some of the disposables are cute too...or at least they're working on it!

  13. Oh, they do! I'm going to be blogging about that soon. Really, it's up to you to make the decision about what's best for your family. As long as everyone is healthy, what's the big deal?

  14. Wow! Good for you! We used to cloth diaper (I really should start again, I have no excuses), but I'd be way too intimidated to sew my own. I made my first shirt from a pattern last week and...sewed up the arm holes. :P

  15. I was really intimidated to sew my own too...that's why I took a class! I'm much more into quilting. I find patterns scary! I think I would probably sewn up the arm holes too:)

  16. We use both cloth and 'sposies, and while I like the wetness indicator on Pampers Swaddlers, I LOVE the cloth!  It's so easy right now since she's not on solids.  I'm definitely going to do a post about how we do our dipes.  Even though I've sewn clothes, I don't even want to attempt a diaper.  I'll leave that to Bummis, Thirsties, Flip, and the other experts.

  17. LOL. The diaper was pretty easy but we still have to see how they work! They might not do so well! I'm pretty sure we're going to start her out in 'sposies (especially since I don't want to have a newborn stash and and for when she's bigger stash). We'll start cloth once she fits into the OS cloth diapers we have. I'm looking forward to your post...I'm interested in how you're doing it!
