I Don’t Understand

I get that there are just some things that I won’t ever understand.  I’m cool with that.  One of the more current things I just don’t get is the hatred for Tim Tebow.  I know I used the word hatred.  It’s such a strong word but that’s what I see in the media, on Facebook and Twitter.  I just don’t get it.

I get that you might dislike him as a quarterback or as a person but where is this hatred coming from?  How many of you that hate his have actually met the man and can honestly say you don’t like him?  I can’t tell you how many statuses and tweets I saw that said something along of lines of “Time for a Tebow takedown!”  Like all the Patriots were taking on Tebow all by his lonesome.

I guess I really don’t have to think all that hard about it.  I think there is so much hatred because he is living his faith.  Not only his he living his faith, he’s using actions and not just words.  He’s visual about praying.  He’s not hiding it but daring to do it out in the open.  I’ll be the first to admit that I think it’s annoying that it’s called “Tebowing” instead of praying but that’s a whole other rant.  I’m also not surprised by it.  Jesus told us that the world would hate us (his followers) because they first hated him (John 15:18).  How can you hate a guy who inspires others and gives of himself?  Check out this article….what an amazing guy!

So if you’re one of those who hate or strongly dislike Tebow, by all means, go for it.  It’s hurting no one but you.  And it makes you silly and petty.  So even though the Broncos got their butts kicked by New England, I’m hoping they have a great season next year!

  1. Not sure why it is, but people need something to hate. Frustrating. Not a football fan, but impressed that someone in his position would be a strong witness.

  2. The only reason I ever disliked him is because he played for Florida (my school's biggest rival!).  Now that he's in the NFL, I don't really care one way or another because I don't really follow NFL football.  I'm glad he's out there living his faith, but I don't really like the term "Tebowing" (isn't it just genuflecting or something?).

  3. Three things:

1.I don't like him because all he talks about is his faith. He may be really cool or interesting but for me, if a person only talks about 1 thing(whether it's religion, politics, whatever) then I have no idea if there is more to them or not. Good for him for being so open about his religion but it would be nice to see other sides of him I guess. He obviously isn't obligated to do that but I think he wouldn't be so polarizing if he did.
2.I guess when it comes to football most people associate the team with the QB so it's easy to direct mean comments that way when games go like the did yesterday for the Broncos and Patriots. Obviously the Patriots had such a strong offensive game and that speaks way more to the weakness of the Broncos defense then Tebow and the offense. Some people are just stupid and mean though and get waaayyy too serious about the whole thing.

3.Honestly, when it comes to tebowing (praying), I think that is a way more appropriate way to acknowledge a TD then what some people do. I hate a bad winner so when I see some players freaking out, spiking the ball, jumping into the stands, yelling etc etc that really annoys me. With him, he just takes a quiet personal moment and moves on. It's humble and it's not rubbing a score in the other teams face. Oh football :D

  4. I honestly think it's because he does live his faith. People are always looking for a scandal and he's a genuine guy.

  5. I'm so with you on this. We (society) hates on other athletes who cheat on their wives, get caught with hookers, are busy sexting. So, here is a guy who does none of those things and suddenly people need to find fault with that too? Definitely odd.

  6. I don't understand individual person hatred at all! I mean I get the boo enemy sports team but I completely agree with you on the whole zoning him out.

  7. Oh it is ridiculous, we are huge Tebow supporters in our house (we do live in Gainesville, GO Gators!). It really bothers me that people hate him, you all don't even know him. He is the most genuine and sincere person out there. He lives his faith and is amazing. We have a beautiful playroom on my floor at the hospital I work at thanks to him.

  8. as my son says "we liked Tebow before it was cool" and i think disliking him is just a "cool factor."  we are not Christian but none the less we think he is a great role model for our boys because he is genuine.  he not only says he has a faith but LIVES his faith each and every day.  he also has done some wonderful things for the community through out his life and i ma sure he will continue to do so (considering how the rest of his family is).  i will say i do not like the way people try to demonize him and just wait to see him slip up.  what's so wrong with a pubic figure ACTUALLY living up to his word and doing good things instead of beating women or fighting dogs.

  9. I think you're right about that! Society likes to be negative. So really, either way you're hated. I hope he has a great career and proves the haters wrong:)

  10. I love how he doesn't show off all the nice and good things he does. He does them without expecting anything in return. So different from so many others. In the end he'll have his reward!

  11. It seems to be such a personal hatred...how about we hate those who cheat on their wives and abuse their families and pets instead?

  12. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thinks this! There is some seriously wrong with our society!

  13. I think it's one thing to dislike him for playing for a rival and hating who he is as a person. I can dislike Andrew Luck for playing for Stanford but I don't hate him, so I totally get what you're saying. I just don't get the personal hatred! And yes, can we just call it praying?

  14. I agree about the strong witness!

  15. But is he actually doing all the talking about his faith or is it the media portraying it? I think that's what gets me. And I wonder...would he still be hated if he was Jewish or Muslim?

  16. I don't think he's hated for being Christian. I think he's disliked because people like to bring down others who believe in something good in the way he does. Personally, I like it when people bring more to the table then just 1 aspect of their life but I don't think that is why most people don't like him. It's because he's happy, a steadfast believer and in the world we live in today, not many people know how to get to that place in their lives. So they bring down others to make themselves feels less insecure. Honestly, I think he would be attacked more if he were Muslim or Jewish because american's in general believe there are more negative stereotypes in those religions then the official religion of America which is Christianity. But, it's just my opinion.

  18. I think he'd be hated more if he was Jewish, I'm 100% certain he'd be hated AND feared if he was Muslim, you have no idea the stuff most Muslims go through on a daily basis, especially if they visibly/openly speak about their religion.

  19. I don't get the hate at all, generally speaking, I don't get personal hatred of someone, you don't know, who hasn't done anything against you personally.

Strong dislike, yes, but not hatred, and especially not, as you've pointed out as well, of an individual.

I must also admit, that not only am I really late to the conversation (sorry, new follower), I'm not American, and I don't watch football :P So I haven't followed the debate closely, but, although I'm not going to tell anyone how to practice their religion, and I'll defend your right to practice and believe however and whatever you want, as long as you are not harming others, I just don't understand the need to be so public about your personal worship of God, at least as a Christian (other religions have other scriptures). My reason for this is based on the following passage: "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." - Matthew 6:5-6 (New International Version)

So while I think there's much much MUCH worse things he could be doing, and there's no foundation at all for hating him, I guess I just don't get WHY he is doing, because it seems to me, like he wants to be seen, he wants to be controversial, and he wants people to know what a good Christian he is.
