I Broke My Car

I was on my way to watch my friend’s little girl while she went to a doctor’s appointment.  I got in my car like always, turned it on and put it in reverse.  As I start to back up I hear this really loud scraping sound.  At first I thought it was just a rock but when it didn’t stop after 5 seconds I stopped and put the car in drive.  As I drove forward the scraping sound continued.  I was perplexed…what the heck was wrong with my car?  So I jumped out and this is what I saw:

Pretty huh?  Actually it was out more but I pushed the bumper back up so it wasn’t hanging so much.  Somehow I managed to pull my bumper off so it’s only attached in the middle part, right under the Nissan medallion thingie.  The best part is I have no idea how this happened.  I’m so thankful I was at home and not out.  I called my friend and she ended up bringing her daughter to me (which is a whole other story in and of itself since her 2 year old is scared of my beagle).

I called The Man at work.  Forget calling the cell phone cause I knew he wouldn’t answer…I called control on the boat.  They found him quickly (turns out he was on watch) and I know he was surprised to hear me.  I told him what happened and sent him a photo to his cell.  Then I started crying cause his show opens tonight and I have no way to get there to see him!  He has duty and doesn’t have time to come and pick me up or drop me off.  He’s ok that I can’t be there since I can go to tomorrow night. I’m the one that’s upset…it’s opening night!  I can’t believe I’m going to miss it!  Of course I was bawling and basically had a meltdown.  I’m blaming it on the hormones.  He calmed me down like only he can do and he told it would be fine.  After we hung up I then sent a picture to my mom and she called me.  She laughed at me.  Thanks mom.  At that point it was kinda funny.  Seriously, who breaks their bumper in their driveway? I think it might take a special kind of talent!

I also shared a photo on Facebook and Twitter.  Thank you to all of you how checked to make sure Munchkin and I were ok.  We are fine, just feeling silly!

The Man might not know it yet, but I’m going to let him deal with fixing it tomorrow.  I’m heading to see fields and fields of tulips with a friend and he’s staying home cause he doesn’t want to see beautiful flowers.  Fixing my bumper will be a good way to fill his time!

  1. PK....you poor thing!   Looking at the pics, the bumper looks pretty clean.   Doesn't look like you backed over a rock or anything.  Call it my NY-suspicious mind but...I've seen things like this when someone tries to steal a bumper from a car.  Any chance someone was tampering with your car...in your driveway or somewhere else and it just gave way when you moved?

All that counts is that you and baby PK are okay!!

  2. Oh no!! I am so sorry. What a nightmare. If it makes you feel better I would be crying too and I don't have hormones to blame it on.

  3. Maybe...our cars are parked up behind our house and I didn't hear anyone back there (our bedroom is right there) but you never know. Hopefully DH will be able to figure it out!

  4. LOL. I'm a crier so it doesn't take much...I'm using the hormones as a scapegoat while I can!

  5. Oh no! I would have been an absolute mess too! And like your mom, my mom definitely would have laughed! Good thing they are there for us to help lighten the mood!

  6. I am glad to hear that you and baby Munchkin are okay. I hope it's easily fixed! Sorry you had to miss opening night.

  7. Oh my gosh!  If you need anything, call me!  I'm glad you are okay.  Don't feel so bad about freaking out- when I was pregnant, I cried over a broken mug.  Really.  The hormones do weird things to you!

Also, when I was in college, I got into a tiny, icy fender bender with a "Slow, children" sign (I see the irony).  My bumper came off a bit, and let me tell you, it's amazing what some duct tape and rope will fix!  Obviously, that's a typical poor-college-student solution, but I hope your husband is able to fix it for you!

And again, I'm glad you are safe!  That's the important part!

  9. Thank you. DH wasn't able to stay after the show so he said it was ok I wasn't there...but I'm looking forward to being there tonight!

  10. Thanks. Everything is ok and since it looks like gorgeous weather, The Man will fix my bumper AND mow the lawn today...score!

I love that you hit the Slow, children sign:)

  11. HOLY COW. I hope it's an easy enough fix. How random is that, though? :O

  12. That's what I said! It just randomly fell off! And my husband was able to fix it thankfully:)

  13. Oh geez, I wonder if someone else messed it up and that is how you only noticed once it started dragging! Good luck!

  14. I was thinking the same thing but DH thinks I scrapped it on the concrete parking thingis one to many times and it finally gave way. SO thankful that it happened at home and not while I was it. And he was able to fix it:)

  15. That's what I though! The Man says it was much fault though....just thankful that he was able to fix it!

  16. With that look, I’d go with
Patty’s intuition, Poe. I think someone tried to take your front bumper but
didn’t have time to do so. Be extra careful next time, okay? Btw, your mom did
a great job by making you smile despite what you were feeling. Moms are just
    great!

  17. Moms are the best:) I'm really like mine!

  18. I'm sorry about what happened to your white car. I'm glad it's fixed now. I agree with Tyra, Poe. That is possible. I suggest you install hidden cameras near your parking area to monitor your car - if it happens again (which I hope does not happen), you’ll be able to see who the culprit is. By the way, didn't you hear any alarm beforehand?

  19. Thanks! It's been fixed and is doing ok for now:) As for an alarm...I did it when I was backing up. We think it was just because it kept getting scrapped.

  20. That looks terrible! From what I can see, it seems that the
whole bumper had been removed from the car! It’s sad that you were not able to
watch his show because of that problem. One a side note, though, it’s a good
thing that you were still able to smile despite what happened.

  21. I'm glad that your car is okay now, Poe. Always make sure that your alarm works well. A car's alarm is one important feature that shouldn't be belittled. We never know when we could be a victim of a crime.

  22. What a relief. It's good to know that you and Munchkin are okay. I assume the bumper has been fixed now. By the looks of your car, it doesn't look that old for the bumper to snap. I smell something fishy here. Did you find out what happened?

  23. What the….how far did you drive before you went to check? I would have jumped out of the car and checked it already when I heard a scraping sound. After all, I would want things to be safe. As for funny things happening “There is always something funny even in the worst moments”. At least your car broke down on your driveway and not in the highway. You were very lucky!
