Mom and I were on our way back to Kingston from Edmonds on the ferry last week and about 1/2 way there she says…”Is that a submarine? I think that’s a submarine!” I was like, “No, it’s not a sub!” but then I turned around and lo and behold, it WAS a submarine!
It’s not all that unusual to see a sub in Puget Sound. After all there are two bases on the sound that the subs go in and out of. I had just never see one before. I’ve been up close and personal with on while it is pier side and I’ve even been on one (not surprising since The Man is a submariner!) It was pretty cool to see one sailing free.
I was pretty fascinated with it. I just wanted to watch it while we sailed by each other. I don’t know if it was me being sentimental or just realizing that with The Man’s career ending soon I’ll be a sub wife no longer. It was just cool to see the sail sticking out of the water. To know that there were going to happy wives and kids that night, with their husbands/dads coming home. Knowing the joy, even if the sub had only been our for a short time. To me, it was more than just a sub. It’s about the men who serve on it and the families who wait for them.
To those that serve in the Silent Service, thank you.
