Chocolate Gravy

When I was a kid my grandmother would make chocolate gravy for breakfast.  It's a family favorite and while we love it I've found that there are many people who have never heard of it and have never had it.  My mom, one of eight says that they used to eat it cause it was cheap to make and there were a lot of them to feed.  I liked it as a kid cause it was chocolate...who wouldn't love chocolate for breakfast?  It's easy to make and I made it for the first time this past week.  Before that Granny, Mom or my cousin Terri would make it so I didn't need to!  But with being away from all of them it became necessary for me to make it...and it's become a comfort food for me since Granny died.

Chocolate Gravy

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup flour
1/4 cup cocoa powder
water  (or milk)  I'm not sure how much...you just add it till it looks right.

Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. I like to use whisk.  Keep stirring and it will become thick...and it's done!  You can add butter to the whole batch or you can add some of the gravy  to your plate or bowl and add butter to that.  We like to eat it with biscuits.  Toast works too.  Eating without some kind of bread is overwhelming...way too much chocolate.

The Man tried some and wasn't thrilled.  I assured him that he doesn't have to eat it but our kids will!

  2. Never heard of it, but sounds yummy. I would imagine it could probably be used like Nutella - dip animal crackers or graham crackers into it. Would that be any good?

  3. Cat, it's a more liquidy than Nutella but you probably could do it. I'll have to try it and let you know!
