Getting Ready

The Man is preparing to leave.  He takes care of just about everything while I keep asking questions like "Do you need me to get you deodorant?  Do you have enough socks?  Enough underwear?  Razor blades?"  Thankfully he patiently answers even if I've asked before.  We've been apart before during our almost two year marriage but never due to going out to sea.  Last time he was preparing for this I was 3,000 miles away.  In all of this I've had one job: to sew the name/navy/dolphin tapes to his new poopie suit and NWUs (new working uniform).   It's not a job I love and I put it off as long as I could.

Tapes for the NWUs

NWUs in progress

Finished poopie suit
The things I do for love!  Have I mentioned that even though this is going to be a short separation, I'm not looking forward to it?  X amount of time with no contact is hard.  I hate not being able to call him.  I keep reminding myself that I can do this!

For my milspouse friends:
Do you sew the tapes on your hubby's uniforms or do you take them to the tailor?
If you do, do you enjoy it?

  1. i ask hubby a dozen and one questions too...its just i know that later i will get an email saying "babe, can you send me...." lol

i dont own a sewing machine, though i am contemplating purchasing one, so i take it all to the tailors.

here's my question to you: what sewing machine do you have? i know how to use one, i was taught at school when i was younger. also, don't you need a different type of needle to sew in the name tapes...HELP! :)

  2. definitely take them to the tailor. I remember my mom always sewing on the stuff for my dad's uniform. She knew ALL the regs and even took in work from some other sailors.

  3. this time we took his uniform to the tailor only because I had no clue what the specifics regs were regarding the base location patch should be for his whites. Now that I know, Ill probably attempt it myself next time. Its easy once you have an original to copy :)

  4. I do them all since we're cheap :) Took me a while to find the right sized needle, but once I did it wasn't bad at all. And now that you mention it, I just remembered I have to sew the stuff on his new coveralls soon...

  5. I don't own a sewing machine so the tailor it is! I wouldn't want to ruin anything on hubby's uniforms either!

  6. Would he hate me if I pointed out that they taught him how to sew his patches on during boot camp? LOL I'm also nervous about messing up his uniforms so I don't touch them. 20 years ago I washed his working whites (yes, they had working whites 20 years ago) with a black ink pen in the pocket. He's been successfully washing his own uniforms ever since. :o)

  7. The Army has velcro (or hook & pile tape as they call it!) on the ACUs. No more sewing for me :)

    Have a blessed weekend!

  8. I did that for my hubby when we were both in the Military. I did it by hand, sometimes. I did mine as well. We were both in the Air Force, where we met....overseas, in England. Many years ago. We are still together! Hugs!

  9. I know how to sew, but that fabric is thick! So no, they go to the tailor. But it's only happened once since we got married and it won't happen again since he's not staying in. And you totally can do this! You are part of the elite group of subwives--they can do anything!

  10. He takes them to the tailor straight from the Exchange. I don't have to do anything. I would do it but it isn't that expensive to have it done at the tailor.

  11. The only thing I do with his uniform is admire him in it, he takes care the rest.

  12. I would be too scared to mess it up! The hubs has someone who does that and I admire the view when he puts it on. ;)

  13. Believe it or not, but he's actually the one that does it. I have no skills in sewing, they are horrible!

  14. Nope, he does all his uniform things himself (that includes washing and folding sleeves). He takes it to the tailor if it needs name tapes or anything sewn on. I'm not gonna be responsible for screwing up his uniforms lol.

  15. No uniforms here! I've sewn everything from baby blankets to ball gowns, but I'm WAY too scared to mess up a uniform! Good for you for diving into it! And thanks for sharing with us on #milfammonday!

  16. Oh my goodness, you are an amazing wife for sewing. I'm pretty much hopeless with anything sewing or handmade outside of cooking. I'm pretty sure my husband would take all his uniforms and run if I offered. Ha, ha. :)

  17. I was super scared to mess it up too but I had an example to follow. It's really not that hard, just a pain because of the thick fabric.

I must admit that there are times I miss the view too since he doesn't wear them anymore. Ahh, the memories!

  18. I love that! Mine probably could have sewn them on but it's really better that I did it:)

  19. That's the only thing I ever did for his uniforms. He took care of everything else! I was also afraid I'd screw them up somehow!

  20. LOL! There's no way I'd touch a ball gown but I can handle name tapes:)

  21. Haha, thanks! I enjoy sewing so it was a way I could help:) Plus he tended to wait to the last minute too, to tell me that he needed them!
