International Babywearing Week

October 8-14, 2012 is International Babywearing Week.  I’m happy to say we are a babywearing family, though not as often I would like.

I think the neck pain I had right after Munchkin was a deterrent in the beginning, as was the fact that I had no idea what I was doing!  I have two moby wraps but I have a hard time with them.  I haven’t used them too much (read: none.)  My friend Joyce did come and show me how to use it.  Munchkin did not like it and cried when I put her in it.  I haven’t tried since.  I should but there’s just way to much fabric for me.  I’m sure I’ll get around to trying it again at some point.

Joyce also let me borrow her Mei Tai carrier. 2012-08-05 13.43.10 I like this one a lot more because it’s so much easier to use. Munchkin didn’t mind being in while asleep but when she was awake she would cry the entire time.  I’ll be trying this one again once she’s a little bigger.

The Man likes to just carry her and that works for us.  I did want her to get used to a carrier since I knew we had an airplane ride in our near future and I wanted to be able to use a carrier for the trip.  Munchkin will be on my lap for the nonstop flight from Seattle to Boston.  I knew a carrier would make life easier while walking through the airport.

So we bought an Ergo2012-09-15 08.48.04I had been wanting this carrier but put off buying it cause it is expensive.  This has been a good investment and she doesn’t mind riding in it, even with the infant insert.  I know it’s going to make walking around the airport easier.  She even falls asleep in it which is great.  I love wearing this carrier because I don’t feel like I’m carrying munchkin at all.  It’s super comfortable and is one of the best baby items we’ve purchased.

I don’t have a ring sling and I really want one (yes, that’s hint.)  I feel like the ring sling would be great for around house while the Ergo is great for out and about.  I love having her close and still having my hands free.

Do/Did/Will you wear your baby?

What carrier did/do you prefer?

Why?

  1. I have worn all my babies. I used ring slings or just a sling. Breast feeding I found a plain sing was best. My only frustrations is I tell new moms about slings and get pushed off, then see them try a sling and take full credit after I spent so much time explaining how to properly carry a child in a sling.

  2. I just found you through the 2012 Military Spouse Blog-Roll and am loving all I've read here! We're currently stationed at a Naval Air Station in Sicily and have had so much fun there. Fun to find other military bloggers!

We have an 18-month-old daughter (and a son due in January) and I wore my daughter all the time. I loved our Moby, but they are definitely not for everyone. We love our Ergo now! I didn't try a sling with my first baby but would really like to use one for my second, especially as he'll be a winter baby and I want to keep him close and warm!

  3. My baby hated carriers for the first few months, because I think she wanted to see around. Now she loves them! We have an Ergo too, and I love it.

  4. Yeah, BF in a carrier is just not going to work for us. Pretty sure a sling won't work either but I'm ok with that.

  6. YAY for the Ergo. It's some of the best money we've spent:) I'm looking forward to being able to use it without the infant insert...w're so close!

  7. LOVED wearing all 4 of mine! I had a sling made by a friend - and it truly saved my life. :) The ergo is a wonderful thing as well, they didn't have those back in the day when I was hunting all over. (We made it work with a bjorn and a snugli) but the Ergo is about 10 million times more comfortable than those 2! Ahhh, but my sling, it holds a special spot in my heart. :) www.whitney-navybeans.blogspot.com

  8. My daughter HATED being in a carrier. When the First Mate was born, I had no choice after dh deployed. I couldn't figure out how to do stuff like grocery shopping otherwise. It was a cheap infantino carrier I got at Target (after I spent a lot of money on a carrier for the Captain that we gave away, I planned on hating it too so I wanted to keep the cost down). I didn't love the carrier, but he almost always fell asleep in it and it didn't kill my back, so I considered it a win. I could never figure out the sling or the mai tai.
