Say Yes To The Dress

I’ve been watching Say Yes To The Dress on Netflix.  I’ve finished all the ones set in Atlanta and am now onto New York.  It’s great to have on in the background while Munchkin and I are playing.  Wedding dress backThe Man just laughs at me when he comes home and it’s on.  He knows how I feel about wedding dress shopping…I’m so glad I never have to do it again! I had a good experience I just don’t want to do it again. I had fun shopping with my mom and found THE dress for me. I just don’t want to spend that much money for a dress I’ll only wear for a few hours again!

Usually at the end of an episode I have warm fuzzies and everything is rainbows and glitter.  There have been a couple of times when that hasn’t happened.  It’s usually because the bride has a sense of entitlement.  I hate it when they don’t care about the budget and bully their parents into buying them a more expensive dress.

I cringe when I hear things like “I always get what I want” and “the budget doesn’t matter” or anything along those lines.  Do they not know how bratty they sound?  It’s not cute or endearing to hear that from a grown women. It’s not all the bride’s fault, their parents have had a hand in creating the monster.  If they always give in then of course the bride is going to say something like that.  Why get upset now?  You’re reaping what you’ve sown.  It’s a good reminder to me, to make sure to teach Munchkin gratitude.

Also, the budget for some of these dresses boggles my mind.  If they have the money to spend, great. But some of them are almost what my my entire wedding cost.  It’s just crazy to me!  And the brides who bring tons of people with them is mind boggling to me too. You can’t please everyone and getting tons of opinions just make it harder (at least I think so!) Wedding dress front

I think something that often gets forgotten in the quest to have “the perfect day”…and that’s the fact that what comes after the wedding is more important. The wedding is just a day.  The marriage is (or at least should be) forever.  The wedding doesn’t make the marriage.  The relationship is so much more important!

You get pictures of my dress because every post should have pictures, right?!

Did you have a good experience buying a wedding dress?

  1. I rented my dress. It was a good experience. I only tried on a few dresses. I had a very small budget. I spent $200 to rent my dress. No regrets. Yours is very pretty. I love the lace!

  2. Renting is a great idea! I really wanted to own my dress though:) My Godparents had given me savings bonds every year for about 16 years. My Godmother wanted me to use the money to buy my wedding dress so I did:) I LOVED the lace too. I didn't think I wanted it but once I tried it on, I knew it was the one.

  4. I let me mom talk me into a dress I didn't like as much as another one. I still have regrets about that.

  5. I watch that show all the time and I agree. The spoiled brides are obnoxious. It's not at all cute!

  6. LOVE that show. I've watched all of the available episodes on Netflix. It was totally perfect for those middle of the night nursings back in the day. My jaw always drops a bit at the budget and when the consultants scoff at the measly $2500 budgets!
I found my dress at the second store of our first day looking. Just my mom was with me. Neither of us had a breakdown "this is it" moment. I'm sure I could have found something more "perfect" if we had kept looking, but I didn't want to keep looking and the dress I found was fine enough for me. *shrug*

  7. I love my dress!!! I picked it out with my mom and the entire experience was perfect. We've been married 9 1/2 years and I still LOVE my dress. :) (and it was on clearance and needed minor alterations!) woohoo!

  8. P and I got married in the courthouse, and I used to watch that show and just hate that we did that. I felt like I never got my dream wedding and my marriage wouldn't be perfect. I struggled with it a lot. I mean every little girl day dreams about her wedding! As time went on and P deployed about 10 months into our marriage, I slowly stopped caring especially since I was pregnant and then he almost died in a motor attack on his JSS. I tell you this opened my eyes so much. Since that and having Ev we have just seen this way bigger picture, and you know it doesn't bother me anymore, cause I do have an amazing relationship! A wedding didn't need to happen for that to happen.
Also I agree with the sense of entitlement, people are crazy! 5,000 on a dress? Blah!! I could pay my car off with that! Lol

  16. I still think you still had a wedding, even if it was at a courthouse:) The relationship is SO much more important!

And yes, the debt we could get rid of with $5,000!

  17. Thank you! I still love it! I really want to try it on but it's at my mom's house. Maybe I'll get it out when we visit next.

  19. I love that show, too! I don't get to watch it much due to no cable or Netflix, but when I can, I do! I sometimes watch it to justify how much we spent on my dress, because it seemed like a lot to me. But I had a good experience with my mom and sister when we picked it out. Your dress is gorgeous!! I'm so glad I kept mine, and I love trying it on each anniversary (even when it doesn't fit!).
