Trunk Or Treat

Every October our church holds a Trunk Or Treat event.  In the past The Man and I decorated our trunk and handed out candy.  This year was our first year taking Munchkin.  Sadly The Man had to work but Nana went with us.  This year our church expanded the event to include a pumpkin walk, a maze, a chili dump, a hay ride, and games for the kids.  There was so much going on and Munchkin had a great time.

Munchkin dressed up as Minnie Mouse.  Nana made her a bag and even though she couldn’t say Trick or Treat or thank you, she still got candy and treats.  We had fun going around and seeing all the trunks.  In addition to candy she got three small rubber duckies, beads, bubbles, a sticker, and a balloon flower.  She loved carrying her bag around.  I was surprised she wore the Minnie ears for as long as she did.  She was a little overwhelmed by all the kids in costumes.  I think she had a great time though.

She refused to eat chili so she had a shortbread cookie and a few pretzel rods for dinner. I know, I’m getting Mom of the Year.  At least she had some cheese and crackers before we left home!

I’m excited to take her next year.  She should be saying trick or treat and please and thank you.  She should be loving candy and hopefully Daddy will be able to be there to enjoy it with us.

Trunk or Treat

Our church holds a trunk or treat every year.  We participated last year but wasn't totally sure what we were supposed to do.  Our car wasn't very decorated but we did have candy so the kids were happy.  We used it as a learning experience for what we wanted to do this year!

My husband loves Halloween.  He loves decorating and coming up with cool effects.  I know it stems from his time working as a theatre Technical Director.  We on his birthday we went a looked at costumes at the Halloween stores to try to figure out what we wanted to be.  They had some great costumes but decided that we were going to be Mario & Yoshi.  He's always Mario when we play Super Mario Bros. Wii & I'm Yoshi when we play Mario Kart.  But after looking at the costumes we decided that The Man would be Mario, I would be Toad and Miss Molly would be Yoshi.

We were able to find a Mario costume and a Mushroom hat for me.  We couldn't find a Yoshi costume for Molly.  Not surprising.  So I decided that I would make her costume.  I've been quilting for about 5 years and have never ventured into sewing clothes but figured I could handle a dog costume.  I took me about an hour and a half but I did it!

She didn't like the hat and kept shaking her head
The body.  I couldn't get her to look at me!

The Man made a coin out of wood, attached it to a sewing machine motor and a switch.  The kids stepped on a box and made the coin spin.  It was very fun and the kids enjoyed making the coin go.  Or maybe they just liked getting the candy we gave them once they stepped off the box!

You can kind of see the coin...it's on an angle.  The box at the bottom of the picture is what the kids would step on.

I don't have a picture of all three of us...it's on a friend's camera.  I'll add it once I get it from them!

What are you (or your kids) dressing up as this year?

Decimating a Pumpkin, Part III

I love pumpkins.  There' s just something about them.  I love going to farm stand to get my pumpkin.  Going out in the field to pick it works too.  Unfortunately Kitsap County is lacking in pumpkins this year.  One didn't have a good crop and another had a family death, so both are closed.  I'm sure there are others but we don't know about them.  So we went to Safeway.  The ambiance was lacking but the selection was pretty good, considering it's a grocery store.
The Man's 2009 Pumpkin
We can't have uncarved pumpkins at home for very long.  Last year we bought our pumpkins the first weekend in October and carved them.  They didn't make it to Halloween.  This year we were a little smarter and waited till the middle of the month.  The Man LOVES to carve pumpkins.  Last year he did a skull pirate thing.  I hadn't carved in years and did the traditional triangles for eyes Jack O'Lantern.

We had a hard time deciding what to carve this year.  The Man did a face...free hand.  I was boring once again and did a traditional face.  Again.  With triangle eyes.  What can I say, I'm consistent!  And I drew mine on first...I'm not as good as The Man at doing free hand!

Here are a few photos of our fun:

More Crafty Stuff

So last fall while I was browsing on the internet I came across some wooden candy corn.  I'm not a huge of candy corn.  There's something about it that I just don't like.  It kinda tastes like plastic to me.  I do think they are cute as decorations though.  I was remembering the ones I saw online and decided to make some.

The Man sanding the candy corn.
I started by finding a template online.  Than I gave it to The Man so he could cut it out of some of the random wood we have around.  I would have cut it myself but since I haven't used a power saw since 7th grade (Thanks Mr. Nelson!) I decided to let him do it.  Plus it's his saw and if it broke I didn't to be responsible.  Then we sanded it down (I sanded another piece, a good will find.  I"ll be sharing soon!).  Then I added some yellow, orange and white paint and then put some Mod Podge over it.

Here's the finished project:

I'm getting kinda crafty...copying others ideas anyway.  I might come up with some of mine own soon.

Have you been making any thing crafty lately?

Attempting to be Crafty

I've been looking at some crafty blogs and I've been wanting to try some things.  I saw these at Increasingly Domestic and knew I wanted to make them.  I don't have baby food jars but I have been saving a couple of the jars that yeast come in.  They are dark and I knew they would be useful for something.  I just didn't know what.  Until I saw this.  And as much as I've come to enjoy watching football with the man, I sometimes need something else to do.  So when I couldn't take the suspense of the game anymore I got out my newly purchased paint, brushes and the clean jars.

It's fun to start with this:

And end up with this:

I'm  not the best at painting.  The eyes aren't the same size and the wavy mouth is a little messy but I still think they're cute.  Maybe some more practice would help?

I'm excited to make some more things...but first I'm going to paint the sewing room.  I can't wait to get that done so I can get all unpacked and organized.  Than I'll starting being even more crafty!

And in case you were wondering, The Ducks won, 52-31.
